I have always had a passion for interiors, architecture and designers with a clearly defined signature style. I believe in the South we have a simplicity in home design. Yet, in the simplicity there is a rich and thoughtful detail that helps give nod to the care and craft that went into each selection. I love the craftsmanship of a wooden door and the inclusion of a farmhouse sink.
This week’s #southernchat is focused on the Southern Home and all the goodness and richness that goes into our Southern style. I am so thrilled to have a special guest, M.K. Quinlan, Senior Style Editor at Garden & Gun Magazine. When I asked her if there was an approach she’d like to take to the Southern Home concept, her answer was so much more thoughtful than I could ever have hoped…
“Lately I’ve gotten stuck on this idea of “slow-style.” It’s a play on the slow-food movement, a way of considering your personal style – whether in your home or your wardrobe—in a manner that is authentic to the person you are and the place where you’re from. There’s no science to it, but I think combining heirloom pieces with new purchases that have meaning to you is a good place to start.
My least favorite thing in the world is walking into a home that has been “designed”—each piece of furniture new, fabrics perfectly color-coordinated, family photos stuffed in drawers. It doesn’t tell me anything about the people who live there. This is the danger of hiring an interior designer and not including your personal tastes and opinions in the design process.
In the South, I think we’re able to rise above this more than most because of the value we place in our personal history, and because the home is about so much more than “looking pretty” to us. It’s about entertaining and letting people into your life.”

I have never thought of the Southern Home in such a way, but it truly describes the Southern way and my own personal approach to decorating. I have been collecting and curating pieces for as long as I can remember to slowly build my home into the unique interior it is today. The story behind each piece is truly inspiring, when you step into someone’s home, being able to learn the history behind an item is even further rooted in our art of storytelling. And, if you know me well by now {or if we’re friends on Pinterest …} you know my own personal Southern home style is most certainly barn chic.

I just launched my brand new line, heirloomed. and went in search of other “heirloom” quality items that make fabulous finds for the holidays for those who appreciate the finer things in life that are lasting. These are a few of my favorites!

like commemorating any special event, our first child is one we will do just as meaningfully as any other. i was on the hunt for the perfect gift for my mother & mother-in-law who threw a baby shower for me this past weekend. our parents have been doing so much for us to prepare, in all the excitement as we await our little boy.
i adore the simple, classic, Southern tradition of the silhouette, but of course we will have to wait on that one for a bit {hard to do before he’s born, you know ..}. the stackable 1,2,3 and a,b,c rings i am just obsessed with – simple and easy to add to as your family grows, but i decided that i loved this more as a gift idea for a new mom {ie: me!} than as grandma gifts. and so, i settled on the vintage-inspired initial charms that each grandma can use however they please to commemorate their grandson and his new name. i think they are just darling and i’m so happy with the find.
i wanted to find a gift that would be as special and memorable as the shower itself, and also one that would play to a little surprise we were planning for the shower. we have been working to find the perfect name for our little guy, and 8 months later we have finally found it. and so, we used the shower as the perfect time to surprise our parents, family & friends by revealing his name. but, more on that tomorrow!

it’s never too early for your first heirloom! the very first baby gift i received came from my mom { besides the actual gift of our baby-to-be of course! } and was this absolutely adorable little piggy pewter spoon.
this was the perfect little gift for our little guy, one he’ll cherish for years to come i am certain. being that i am a huge lover of pewter, instead of registering for china for our wedding { i am lucky to have a set of grandma’s and nana’s china } we registered instead for pewter serving pieces. and the little pig on the spoon was just too cute for a feeding spoon, don’t you think?
and, ironically i was fortunate to have met the folks at beehive at the last gift show in Atlanta too. i simply love their matching pewter cup as well, how darling? i have several tiny sterling cups that were passed down from both sides of my family, which i can only assume were baby heirlooms at one point in time as well.
and, so i got on a little piggy kick, because really they are just too cute. another heirloom option that i’m loving is the piggy bank. making a perfect gift for baby, or for a 1st birthday, encouraging good fortune and good habits early on. i adore these two twists on a traditional bank, the glass and the gold make for quite a statement, even for the littlest of people.

The art of entertaining, made-from-scratch cooking and the passing down of traditions is not a thing of the past after-all. I am so thrilled to share with you the new IceMilk Aprons classic Children’s Collection of aprons – just in time for the holiday season!
The holidays are a time for giving, sharing, and entertaining when family and friends come together and dust off those family recipes that make the holidays, the holidays. My sister and I were in the kitchen at such a young age with both my mother & grandmother, learning the basics of cooking and baking from scratch. I believe everyone can relate to that.
The concept for a children’s line has always been a part of the plan for us, and we have received a lot of customer feedback of people wanting to have an apron for their little ones to cook in as well. With a mantra of “Garden, Gourmet & Glamour,” I knew we’d be a match made in heaven in an instant. Heather and her team truly have a gem of a shop, located right on Main Street in the quaint town of Honesdale, PA.

I just adore the mix of products they have chosen for their store – from boots and bags to cloches and pots. And now, aprons of course! Heather has even been canning her very own homemade preserves – and I adore the simple way she has chosen to package them. The perfect product mix for a small town country girl at heart.

From garden to craft to cooking-from-scratch, Martha Stewart‘s MARTHA logo says it all in one intricate glance, embodying everything she is as a person, as a brand, as the heirloom matriarch of our time.
I had the very fine honor of crossing off one pretty hefty To-Do on my bucket list this week, I was invited as an audience guest at Martha’s Blog Show. A fabulous trip to New York City was just what I needed in terms of inspiration for a brand new year.
As my thoughts wander about amidst all of the heirloom touches that inspire me each & every day – from fashion to cooking to antiques to architecture – I find it important to also note the people behind such things that keep the past in the present for us all to enjoy. There is no denying that Martha Stewart has build her own well-deserved empire one stitch at a time, but to me, it is Martha who has led the heirloom-chic trend of today; it is she that keeps it alive and well in the world.
For Gen X & Y, knitting is the epitome of cool, Food Network is a can’t-miss, everyone wants to grow their own fresh herbs, glitter is all the rage, and KitchenAid Mixers are at the top of everyone’s wish list. It is my belief that Martha has inspired all such things in some form or fashion, constantly keeping them in the forefront of fabulous. The craft of sewing or cooking-from-scratch will never be lost in this world of drugstore costumes and microwaved meals.

In my very humble opinion, there are few places in this world more delightful than Serenbe. Located just south of Atlanta, the community was build as an organic farm with green-space galore and the most whimsical little town you could ever imagine.
I am so delighted to share that IceMilk Aprons has partnered with our newest Gourmet Retailer, Harris & Clark – a “thoughtful grocery & food school” located in the heart of the Serenbe community. Founded by Anissa & James Harris, the duo aims to provide a nostalgic & local Southern fare of artisan products within their quaint market space.
From pear butter and pickled peaches, to Farmer D’s organic compost, fabulous loaves of crusty bread, the most beautiful local honey you’ve seen, farm fresh eggs & local cheeses, and of course – IceMilk Aprons. They have so many wonderful cooking school events that are hosted there at Harris & Clark, partnering with local folks to help bring some gourmet learnings & good times.
Spending the late afternoon with Anissa & James was such a wonderful experience and I’m thrilled to be a part of what they have created with their shop. Stay tuned for a special “Heirloom Travel” post on Serenbe, but in the meantime be sure to go out for a visit and explore all there is to love about this little place lost in time.
The mantel has long served as the focal point of the family room, making the mantel clock something of much significance.
From their intricate detailing, ornate facing, solid frames and resounding chimes – their nobility has a sense of grace and stature at the very same time.
I am so thrilled to have recently been given this heirloom mantel clock, passed down to me through the generations that was originally owned by my Great Aunt Ashley, for whom I was named. I can’t wait to get it restored to its former glory and hear the beautiful chimes.
While some companies are off looking for the latest & greatest new look, Vanity Fair has captured the essence of their brand by going back to their roots.
Their latest ad campaign calls on one of days past (1955 to be exact) featuring elegant ladies tastefully posing in their VF lingerie.
Vanity Fair has brought back the very essence of their brand and conjured up the sense of beauty and femininity that lacy undergarments should evoke.
