You know it’s my favorite post of the week, the Heirloom Recipe Series is back for another installment with Ashley Brooke Quinatana of Ashley Brooke Designs!

We’ve been tweeting for some time and even had a fun meet & greet at a past Gift Mart in Atlanta. She’s just lovely and I am thrilled to be partnering up {more to come, stay tuned!} And, hopefully you have already taken a moment to enter the fun giveaway she’s doing on the blog for her fabulous hand-illustrated lemon recipe & note cards!

I loved reading her yummy recipe below, and love that it comes from many generations back. And besides, as a true southerner, she had me at “buttermilk.” Enjoy!


Heirloom Recipe Series with Ashley Brooke Quintana

This is my great grandmother’s (oh-so-yummy!) Buttermilk Candy recipe. I look forward to every Fall when the holidays start to roll around and I start smelling the buttermilk candy in the kitchen. Gosh, this stuff just smells amazing. My great grandma Ann used to make this and bring it to all our family gatherings in a beautiful tin, but now that she is 99, she’s earned her right to relax during the family baking season, and now my grandma Kay (who is featured in the old photo!) her daughter, is in charge of the buttermilk candy. It’s just one of those amazing feels-like-home recipes.  I hope you enjoy!

Buttermilk Candy:
2C – Sugar
1C – Buttermilk
1/4C – Butter
1t – Baking Soda
2T – White Karo Syrup
1t – Vanilla
1C – Peanuts

Mix in a large kettle, sugar, buttermilk, butter, baking soda, and Karo syrup over medium heat. Stir  and check with a candy thermometer until the temperature reaches “soft ball” status.  Remove from heat and let cool. Then add in the vanilla and nuts. Then beat until its very stiff, like fudge.

There are so many things I love about the Heirloom Recipe Series, unexpected things that I could never have imagined when I first dreamed up the concept. One of my favorites is how excited people get about their recipes and the stories behind them. Through this process, they learn things and ask family members things they otherwise would never have known.

I am so happy to have the lovely Sarah Copeland today as a guest in the Series – blogger at edible living and new author of The Newlywed Cookbook { we’re giving away one this week! }. In keeping with a marriage theme, Sarah has the most fabulous love story for us below that involves this wonderful recipe. Heirloom Recipe Series with Sarah Copeland

My Granddad Copeland brought this recipe for Brown Sugar Pudding home from a boarding house in Missouri where he stayed not long after he and my grandmother were secretly married. He gave the recipe to his young bride, my Grandma, Virginia, who I’m told would make it for him just as often as he wanted for the rest of their lives. Grandma and Granddad were married almost 70 years {I know, amazing!}, and were the definition of forever newlyweds. They were always lavishing each other with love and tenderness, which in Grandma’s case often came in the form of good southern cooking.
About marriage and love, Grandma always said to us “learn to make his favorite things.”

The original scanned recipe is in my aunt Gloria’s hand. She, the youngest of my grandparents three girls (they had three girls, then three boys), hand wrote all her mother’s recipes out for my aunt Dorothy, the eldest, when Dorothy got married in 1952. This is one of those pages, which Dorothy used for all the years of her own marriage.

When my parents were married, in 1969, my Aunt Dorothy wrote a hand-written copy of the recipe for my mother (attached). On hers, she wrote “Eat all you want ~ magic ~ it feeds all at your table.” I especially loved that line. It sounds just like my grandma, and it was the truth. Everything she made fed everyone at the table, whether there were 6 or 16, and I never remember there being leftovers of anything. That’s is the spirit of my book, and I hope the love and spirit everyone feels around my table. May it grow to hold 16 one day.

Brown Sugar Pudding

1 1/2 cups/300 g packed brown sugar

2 cups/480 ml hot water

1 tbsp unsalted butter

1 cup/115 g all purpose flour

1/2 cup/100 g granulated sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp iodized salt

1/2 cup/120 ml whole milk

1/2 cup/85 g raisins

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Freshly grated nutmeg

Preheat the oven to 450˚F/230˚C/gas 8.

In a big, wide, cast-iron pan {about 10 in/25 cm} mix together brown sugar and water until smooth. Add the butter. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until the sugar dissolves into a deep brown sauce.

Meanwhile, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, raisins, and vanilla in a medium bowl to make a thick batter. Pour the batter into the boiling brown sugar sauce and stir just a little with a wooden spoon to encourage it to bubble to the top. Sprinkle freshly grated nutmeg over the top.

Bake the pudding until it is browned and just set with brown sugar sauce welled up in puddles between the cake, 15 to 20 minutes. Serve warm.

like commemorating any special event, our first child is one we will do just as meaningfully as any other. i was on the hunt for the perfect gift for my mother & mother-in-law who threw a baby shower for me this past weekend. our parents have been doing so much for us to prepare,  in all the excitement as we await our little boy.

i adore the simple, classic, Southern tradition of the silhouette, but of course we will have to wait on that one for a bit {hard to do before he’s born, you know ..}. the stackable 1,2,3 and a,b,c rings i am just obsessed with – simple and easy to add to as your family grows, but i decided that i loved this more as a gift idea for a new mom {ie: me!} than as grandma gifts. and so, i settled on the vintage-inspired initial charms that each grandma can use however they please to commemorate their grandson and his new name. i think they are just darling and i’m so happy with the find.

i wanted to find a gift that would be as special and memorable as the shower itself, and also one that would play to a little surprise we were planning for the shower. we have been working to find the perfect name for our little guy, and 8 months later we have finally found it. and so, we used the shower as the perfect time to surprise our parents, family & friends by revealing his name. but, more on that tomorrow!

One of my very favorite things when I was young, was playing inside my Grandmothers pantry.

It wasn’t very large, just a simple nook with two shuttered doors, but inside was a world of entertainment and exploration. Grandma had a thing about organization, repurposing and efficiency. The shelves were lined with glass jars and canisters of various sizes, each plainly labeled in her handwriting.

My Grandfather worked for a restaurant in South Florida and many of the larger glass canisters were from marachino cherry supplies at the restaurant, the perfect size for basics like flour, sugar and the likes.

My sister and I would spend hours organizing and sorting through the jars – from red hots to butter mints, powdered sugar to brown. Never was the pantry without such staples as Grapenuts and gingersnaps.

To this day I love the allure of an organized pantry, much like an old general store. What is your favorite pantry tip?

I do believe that some of the most wonderful heirloom treasures in the world are found in the kitchen.

I have a set of tin measuring spoons from my Grandmother’s collection that I must admit I use for baking over my trusty, shiny new ones.

Last Christmas, I received a lovely treasure – a set of Tin Woodsman pewter measuring spoons and are sure to become an heirloom for my future generations. My love for pewter continues to withstand day in and day out, but these hearty hammered oversized spoons are simply iconic in the kitchen. A true symbol for a baker, these artful pieces make for such a lovely heirloom gift to enjoy for years & years!

Crystal, along with China and fine silver, has long since been a wonderful heirloom treasure. Likely the collections & pieces were made heirloom-worthy due to their memorable givings at such landmark events as weddings and anniversaries.

I have mixed emotions on matchy-match collections. While there is certainly something to be said for folks who have the patience and breadth to collect each and every piece that their fine crystal brand manufactures, I am much more of the mindset that collections should have a common element but be flexible to accommodate three very key points: 1) uniqueness of each object 2) personal meaning 3) adventure!

So lets take crystal. It is simple gorgeous, there is no denying it. Its finely cut edges simply sparkle in the light. It can make punch a delicacy and turn a dish of butter mints into a handful of pure joy. So instead of sticking to one collection of the same pattern of crystal, consider mixing & matching to hit the three points.

First, uniqueness of each object. With many different cuts, makers and patterns each piece is able to sparkle and shine in its own light and stand out in all its glory. Besides, there are very few patterns in the world where the cakestand is just as pretty as the candlesticks.

Second, personal meaning is a big one. When your collection includes new and old pieces, you’re able to include the heirloom pieces without them seeming out of place. And heirloom pieces from all sides of the family at that – wouldn’t want to not use Nana’s crystal bowl simply because it didn’t match your Waterford wedding pattern. No no no!

Lastly, adventure is a big one! It’s your collection and you should enjoy the hunt as much as you enjoy using the pieces themselves. Searching for the perfect missing piece in your collection becomes an on-going process, giving you reason to stop in at that roadside Antiques store or making a thoughtful selection next time Grandma wants you to go ahead and choose just one thing from her collection to use for yourself.

Long-way-around. There is nothing finer than crystal, in all its dazzling glory. My collection began with a tiny crystal piece from Grandma in my stocking each year. A salt cellar, a bud vase, and years of joy making my heirloom collection complete!

strawberry-refridgerator-cheese-cakeAs I see the packages of fresh strawberries line the shelves at the super market (whatever happened to those cute little baskets?)I can’t help but share this delight of a recipe as we get closer and closer to the spring season.

I love the term gelatin, it reminds me of those orangestrawberry-refridgerator-cheese-cake-2 boxes of Knox. And after much searching, I have finally determined that the “L of C” inscribed on some of the recipe cards in our families collection, stands for “Lady of Charm” who was something of a homemaker icon in Michigan.

So, as most people do love a good cheesecake, I hope you will enjoy this seasonally fresh little treat.

kahluaToday’s featured recipe will be Grandma’s Kahlua, a very special treat that she was known for among friends & family.

Grandma’s kahlua was something that truly brought people together. Making it was no small feat as you’ll see by the quantities it makes on the recipe card, so she always ensured it was an experience had by all.

She would literally make a party out of the making of her kahlua each time she was ready to stock up. She’d invite friends over, having each bring their own empty bottles and throw a great big party as she entertained guests while making the drink and serving them snacks & desserts with kahlua in the recipe.

What an experience it was and friends always looked forward to her kahula parties and were thrilled once the recipe was complete and they had their own bottle full to take home & enjoy! I hope you will do the same.
