Are you in? What are your new year’s resolutions?
It is no secret … I love the south. A quintessential Southern moment is surely that of a front porch filled with rocking chairs, friends & family telling stories, chit chatting away. So, I invite you join us on the Twitter “front porch” for our new #SouthernChat series each Monday at 9:00pm est.
Each week we will have a new guest join us for the chat – from southern craft artisans, companies & brands, bloggers, musicians, chefs and more! We will spend the hour-long chat getting to know our guest, meeting new friends and greeting old friends, and chatting thru a few questions that we’ve compiled in advance of the chat. Most weeks, our chat will include a chance to win a southern-inspired giveaway {special thanks to some of our southern sponsors, partners & guests}.
Joining the chat is easy, simply tweet with us each Monday evening using the hashtag #SouthernChat. Perfect for southern sites, brands, bloggers, for southerners or just those that love and appreciate the south! You can always visit us at heirloomed to see who the latest guest will be, to check out the questions for the week & all the details – and follow along with us on Facebook (heirloomed) and Twitter (@heirloomed) and by using the hashtag #SouthernChat.
For the first installment of #SouthernChat, we will have no guest and just get right down to finding our southern friends online, kicking off the chat and talking about all things southern for the new year! You can join in the conversation with these questions …
Monday, 1/7/12 (9:00pm est) – Kicking off #SouthernChat!
Q1: Nice to meet y’all! Share with us who you are, where you are & your connection to the south.
Q2: Who are some of your favorite southern people, blogs, companies, places, etc. on Twitter?
Q3: What do you love most about the south?
Q4: Happy new year! What great things do you think we’ll see coming from the south in 2013?
Q5: What do you want to see from #SouthernChat this year? Guests, topics, giveaway suggestions welcomed!
This week’s giveaway is from my company, IceMilk Aprons. Chat along with us and you’re entered to win a full adult Rollings of Cinnamon apron (an $85 value) – one lucky person will be chosen at random to win!
I’d love to hear from you if you’re excited about joining in the chats, if you have special guests you’d like to see in the series, or if you are interested in being a guest yourself! Simply click here for more information about being a guest or sponsoring one of our upcoming #SouthernChat events.
i am so happy to share some photos from the grande opening event of the lovely, new Atlanta store – simply put.
i absolutely adore the unique products that paper designer Ashley Woodman and her uber-talented team have, perfect for gifting! the grande opening of this Westside shop was a great gathering, where I enjoyed meeting several new friends and catching up with a few old ones too. i hope you’ll stop in to say hello and check out the lovely assortment of goodies!
the pillows are just killer and there was a campfire candle that makes me want to go take a hike in the woods and never come back! a giant pewter trophy continues to catch my eye each time I walk in the store, and a fun candy bar that is stocked full of hard-to-find candies. and, just in time for Halloween, i can’t get enough of the not-so-spooky {but super cute!} witch display they have put together with our mother & daughter aprons! isn’t it just adorable?

i simply cannot deny the fact that i adore breakfast. from nearly any aspect, any range of food selection and truly at any time of the day. breakfast is truly a meal for champions, as they say.
i had the true and sincere pleasure of experiencing one of the most fun and memorable trips of my lifetime, when my sister and I embarked on a little napa getaway to celebrate her upcoming nuptials a few years ago. we had the time of our lives, nibbling along the way as we tasted & toured the greatest spots in wine country. you may remember the adventure from my heirloom travel post {found here} recapping the highlights of the trip.
our goal was to pop into any place we found on a whim, with little planning or agenda in mind. we did a marvelous job of this accomplishment with just one exception – a little bakery we found in the heart of napa called “sweetie pies bakery.”
once we entered the quaint little bakery and enjoyed our pastries & coffee on the patio, we couldn’t help but go back for another morning indulgence the very next day. it was the perfect start to our days, for several reasons, but what i loved most was the delightful morning buns that we enjoyed. fabulously light and airy, with the perfect coating of cinnamon sugar, these pastries were simply divine!
morning buns are something I’ve never been able to perfect on my own, much unlike most breakfast items I’ve attempted to cook or bake. but regardless of having a handwritten family recipe or a baked-from-scratch adventure of my own, it was these tiny buns and this memory that inspired one of the newest aprons in the IceMilk Aprons collection – Morning Bun Moments.
fondly inspired by the best sister of all time, Courtney, i am so happy to be able to share the final product with you all. each time i say the name or see the apron it brings me back to the fun we had on our trip to california and all the wonderful memories we will share forever.
i am however ready to try my hand at a fresh batch of morning buns of my very own. do you have a recipe to share? a secret to these amazing little pastries? i’d love to know, and i promise, i’ll be sure to share with Courtney too!
Brie is one of my all-time favorite cheeses {what cheese is not though, truly …}
I adore how versatile it is, to be used on a moments whim, able to accomplish both savory and sweet feats with equal ease. On a rustic bread, in a sweet baked puff pastry, or divinely drizzled with honey + figs (I have made it the Sweet Paul way countless times now!). I launched two new apron styles into the IceMilk Aprons “Heritage Collection” this Summer, one of which was inspired by this lovely cheese. I call it beauty in brie.
When decided what to add to the collection, I went back to the small stock of handsewn samples I have from when Grandma was making all of our aprons by hand. I had forgotten we had every played with this colorway and when I came across it I was instantly in love all over again. I am surprised it didn’t make it’s way into the first collection, but for good reason at the time I suppose. The black and oatmeal combination has been a popular one for us to date, and I know the waist apron version will be a welcomed addition that I am so thrilled to add.
The beauty in brie apron was inspired by my Aunt Joanne and her amazing {note: amazing} egg & brie casserole. Since I first had it many years ago, it has grown to become a staple for nearly every brunch I host or attend with a dish in hand. The simplicity and heartiness of the traditional egg casserole, paired with the lavishness of the brie certainly brings about a raised eyebrow or two when you do the big reveal. But I have yet to find someone who doesn’t just adore every bite of this tasty treat.
I have included the original recipe from Aunt Jo below for you to make all your very own. Do note, I personally leave out the sausage as I’m not a pork eater, however I imagine it is simply divine with it in there too. But leaving it out, you surely won’t miss a beat!
—————————–
Aunt Joanne’s Brie & Egg Casserole
Ingredients:
- 1 – 8 oz round of brie

Like many people with an entrepreneurial spirit, I have many mentors to thank for where I am today.
I am a big believer in mentoring and the amazing impact that can be had when one takes the time to share their craft with someone who is passionate. Though I have many family members to thank for their advice and support over the years, one of my business mentors is friend Leigh Chandler of Papillon Linens. I have Leigh to thank for her kindness, patience and every step of the way in setting me up to tangibly succeed.
But, sometimes on a rare occasion, you make an impact without even realizing you are doing so. I received the most wonderful email several months back from Krista Montalvo. Krista owns Ginger Magnolia Catering {which means she’s a fabulous cook, of course!} and emailed me to let me know of a new business she had recently launched – Marmie Bags.
Krista told me in her note that IceMilk Aprons had inspired her to create Marmie Bags. She had connected with the story of our roots, having had the same fond relationship with her Grandmother that I did. She now has children of her own, who lovingly call their Grandmother “Marmie.” I was so taken aback and inspired by her note and have enjoyed popping over and perusing her bags. I love the vintage feel she brings to the product and cheer her on as she continues to grow her business.
I am thrilled that we are hosting our first official giveaway on heirloomed with Marmie Bags, and even more thrilled with the bag she’s giving away! This fabulous bag is very reminiscent of our “Rollings of Cinnamon” apron – I just adore the big black bow and simplicity of the styling.

The art of entertaining, made-from-scratch cooking and the passing down of traditions is not a thing of the past after-all. I am so thrilled to share with you the new IceMilk Aprons classic Children’s Collection of aprons – just in time for the holiday season!
The holidays are a time for giving, sharing, and entertaining when family and friends come together and dust off those family recipes that make the holidays, the holidays. My sister and I were in the kitchen at such a young age with both my mother & grandmother, learning the basics of cooking and baking from scratch. I believe everyone can relate to that.
The concept for a children’s line has always been a part of the plan for us, and we have received a lot of customer feedback of people wanting to have an apron for their little ones to cook in as well. It plays right into the notion of traditions we are hoping to inspire. Children are in the kitchen cooking at an early age and want an apron just like mom to complete the memorable experience.
The Children’s Collection compliments the look of the existing adult line, with the addition of sweet stitch detailing and pockets, perfect for busy little hands! In neutral blends of linen and cotton, the children’s aprons are rooted from classically inspired designs to be passed down for generations. With names like “cozy cupped cocoa,” “sugar cone scoops,” and “bowls of batter,” each apron was inspired by a favorite childhood memory from my childhood. And, not to worry – stories of each are to come, so stay tuned! They even come packaged in preserves jars as well, just tiny versions of the adult collection. I love the Mother + Daughter gift package for that reason – they are so sweet when paired together, and so special.
I’d love to know your thoughts on the new Children’s Collection and greatly appreciate your support in helping to spread the word.
Growing up a Florida girl (7th generation … did I mention?) you know I adore as much Florida as I can get. I am so very excited to share this article today from the Tampa Tribune entitled “Retro-style aprons coming to a modern kitchen near you.” Click here to read about how aprons are playing a meaningful role in the kitchen, with families, and on the runway today.
And, of course a very special thank you to the oh-so-fabulous Jeff Houck (Facebook Page / Twitter @JeffHouck) who took the time to sit down with interest in writing this story. Be sure to check out his foodie blog over at the Tribune, The Stew.
Wax paper rows of farm-raised perfections, caramel & cocoa hand-dippings with pasture times spent gathering.
May sound familiar if you’ve perused our Pecan Orchard Pleasantries Full Apron. This apron was inspired by my beau’s Granny, whom I was lucky enough to spend a chilly winter day with in the kitchen over the holidays.
Year after year she spends countless days hand-picking pecans from the picturesque horse pasture at their family farm to stockpile enough to make endless turtles for the holidays. Cracking, cleaning, & bagging the whole pecans are just the beginning. This recipe truly is an heirloom in their family, and one that will be preserved for generations to come.
The secret to the recipe, of course, is the fresh, whole pecans carefully made into crosses on a wide sheet of wax paper, turtle after turtle. For a quart sized Ziploc bagful, you’ll need about 2 bags of Kraft caramels and 6 squares of chocolate almond bark.
Simply “cross” the pecans, melt the caramels in the microwave & carefully (will be hot) pull of a spoonful of caramel & flatten and place onto each pecan cross. Once these are all carameled, melt the chocolate bricks in the microwave and again spoon on a dollop to complete the turtles! Allow them to firm & dry and then divulge in some serious, farm raised perfection!
Thanks Granny.
National Tie One On Day™ is today, Wednesday 11/25, Thanksgiving Eve. In its 4th year, National Tie One On Day is an opportunity to put a little “give” back into Thanksgiving.
My dear friend, EllynAnne Geisel, author of The Apron Book, Apronisms & The Kitchen Linens Book, created this event. The event centers around wrapping a baked good in an apron, writing a note of prayer or encouragement, and tying one on…an apron, of course! and delivering the wrapped bundle to someone in need of physical or spiritual sustenance, a bit of recognition or just a kind word.
Visit her website www.apronmemories.com for more information and to enter the goodie bag giveaway! Six winners!!
I hope you’ll join me and participate! It’s such a win-win. As EllynAnne says,”Women clad in aprons have traditionally prepared the Thanksgiving meal, and it is within our historical linkage to share our bounty.”
