The intent of my blog heirloomed is to celebrate things that are inspired by yesterday but chic for today. So, you’ll have no trouble understanding why I instantly fell for the sparkly goods at Candy Shop Vintage.
I had the pleasure of meeting the founder, jewelry designer Deirdre Zahl earlier this year at The Southern Coterie Summit. I loved her jewelry (of course) and her business card & logo were just as beautiful. Which of course translates quickly to her website filled with original collection, vintage-inspired jewelry as well as real vintage pieces that she has collected. Oh, and then there is the packaging.
I love the analogy of the name – Candy Shop – and the nod to childhood. Picking through the goods, whether sweet or sparkling, as a child or adult, in search of the perfect piece.
I pulled together just a tiny few of some of my favorite pieces from the site. I’d love to know what your favorites pieces are, too!
Since I’m so inspired by things of the past, I decided it might be fun to start a new little series on the blog … yesterday / today. The series will take a look at things that are chic today, as compared to pieces from the past that inspired those trends.
Earlier this week I got an email from my friends at Layla Grayce showcasing all of the beautiful mint green items they have on their site. Seeing all the mint together in one place made me realize instantly the color connection from the vintage jadite pieces that were once stacked on kitchen shelves everywhere. The gorgeous milky green glass has long been a favorite of mine, especially against fresh white, as a display piece just perfect for styling.
Though I am pretty sold on a neutral palette, this summer trend is so vintage and yet so current for today that I can’t help but fall for it. I love that it goes effortlessly from a casual day at the beach to the most glamorous red carpet event without missing a beat.

With Easter right around the corner, this week we will #southernchat about Easter Traditions, a topic suggested in one of our earlier chats. Everyone has their own special traditions for Easter – from family to eggs to baskets. Some of my favorite Easter style pieces are oh-so-Southern-inpsired, keeping it classic but still spring fresh. Seersucker, straw, pastels, stripes and floral scents help set the stage for an Easter gathering you’ll never forget.
My own traditions growing up were family events that brought us closer together. My grandmother always put together special Easter egg hunts at her house, leaving little clues in each egg that led to the next. After the last egg, the next clue helped us to find our Easter baskets which were filled to the brim with treats. The wooden baskets we found were handcrafted by my parents and painted in soft spring colors, mine with a bunny and my sisters with a chick on it. They went perfectly with the Easter dresses my sister and I would wear as we made our way to Easter brunch at my grandmother’s country club.
This week, we have a special guest, Liza Graves, co-founder of styleblueprint.com. I very much related to the Easter memories that Liza had to share.
I grew up honoring Lent, with a grandmother and all of her sisters who gave up liquor each spring for 40 days and then got quite tipsy at the annual Easter party, held at my grandmother’s on a 3-acre lot on the river in the second oldest house in town. It was THE party to be invited to. Ham biscuits, coconut cake and sparkling punch, spiked and served out of a punch bowl, were always mainstays on the buffet table. Sometimes my grandmother & her sisters would get a little tipsy, get into arguments and storm off to their respective homes, all within one block of one another – just in time for the caterer to leave and everyone to proclaim that it was the best party yet.
I do think that everyone has funny Easter traditions, but the big Easter Egg Hunt at a friend or neighbor’s house, lent, smocked dresses, ham biscuits, coconut cake and family spats that end in hugs are something that most southern families have in common!

On Valentine’s Day, what better theme for Throwback Thursday than jewelry?
From rhinestones to broaches to cocktail rings galore, I love the constant inspiration that is taken from vintage jewelry to style some of the most fabulous events to everyday fashion. I love those pieces that feel like they just stepped out of your great grandmother’s jewelry box, but even with all the pieces out there today I found it a bit hard to pin down those doing it fabulously. J.Crew is one I think that has led the most recent trend of classic clasps and hardware, and BHLDN is hot on the heels of making the fanciest fetes forever chic.

There are so many things I love about the timeless style of the south. I am a pretty big fan of classic wardrobe staples, rarely chasing too many fads. But, you can see southern style intertwined into every facet of the fashion industry today. The history of southern materials, like Sea Island cotton and Cone denim have made and inspired pieces new and old. Southern traditions, like field hunting, have provided style signatures like boots, outerwear, vests, and patches. And, the elegance from southern society has given nod to everything from beauty, hair & makeup trends to red carpet looks. Pearls & monograms, too. Charleston just hosted their Fashion Week last month, spotlighting many southern designers. And, even some of the south’s favorite staples aren’t necessarily made here, but can be seen in every closet on the block.
Since we are still in the beginning stages of #southernchat, I’d love to take a 1,000 foot look at one of the truly classic themes here in the south – southern style. From boots to outwear to men’s & women’s wear to accessories and more, there are so many ways we can drill down into these theme areas in future chats, but I’m hoping by taking this week to look at fashion and style of the south as a whole, that we can celebrate the staples that keep us looking chic. We’re exploring our favorite companies, style pieces, designers, purveyors, trends & more this week!

A southern staple for gentlemen everywhere, the bow tie is now back in vogue for the masses. With so many styles, from prints to plaids, this classic neckwear piece is really making a statement for those confident enough to rock it. And, there are some companies jumping in to ensure the bow tie tradition remains alive and thriving for us all to enjoy, each one giving their own personal twist. The unofficial start of Summer – it’s Memorial Day at last.
And, a happy 150th birthday to Bacardi Rum! I simply adore their vintage-inspired commercials that are running now in celebration. The glamorous look, the excitement in the music, the simplicity of it all. And the tag, “150 Years of Starting Parties” just couldn’t be more fun.
