I continue to be excited by the different nuances of the Heirloom Recipe Series with each new guest. And, this week I’m excited to have TWO special guests! The “dynamic duo” of Valley & Co. – a husband + wife wedding and events planning team. What could possibly be sweeter or more passionate? I am in love. And, their love for the beach seems to rival mine – which I both love and appreciate!

And, if they couldn’t be any more fabulous, they are hosting a fun IceMilk Aprons giveaway over on their blog and let me share some of my top picks for Spring, too! If there is anyone that can’t wait to thaw out {as much as those in the South do have to thaw …} it’s me, so I loved looking ahead to this much anticipated season with them. Click over to enter before it’s too late!

If the love hasn’t already started pouring, check out the recipe below and I know you’ll be hooked for sure! I hope you’re loving the Series as much as I am.

Plum Torte

Family recipes are treasures in our home. They’re a comfort, a memory and a delicious bit of happiness.

While we have so many cherished recipes from both sides of our families we look forward to during the holidays, birthdays and celebrations and those that celebrate our heritage, one favorite rises to the top of our list. This recipe for plum torte brings back memories of being at home with Aleah’s parents on the island. Just saying the island bubbles up memories of laughter and relaxation and waking up to a sunrise over the salty sea with the clouds billowing atop the water.

Bonfires and s’mores are a must and beach walks and long dinners  and days spent just enjoying family are commonplace. Aleah’s mom always whips up just incredibly fresh Northwest-style dinners that last for hours and on many occasions those memorable dinners, whether celebratory or just because,  are topped off with plum torte baked by Aleah’s dad.

What’s so special is that for visits home we know to expect this plucked-from-the-tree goodness made from scratch. While the recipe comes from a cookbook with dog-eared pages and a tattered cover it’s made from love, and Aleah’s dad has gotten it down to his own science and whips it up from memory. Here is the original recipe from the cook book – it’s the perfect recipe to cook up for springtime holidays and celebrations. We hope it becomes a tradition in your home. Enjoy!

Each day I get more & more excited about the wonderful things I have to share with you here on my blog, and today is certainly no exception. My long-time Twitter friend {we go way back, in Twitter years} Sarah Copeland { or as I like to call her @edibleliving } of blog edible living  has just come out with a brand new cookbook and it could not be more fabulous.

If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for a good clean design and great photography with a rustic edge, and The Newlywed Cookbook captures the aesthetic to a point of perfection. I have a terrible addiction to collecting cookbooks and ones of this look line my shelves just begging me to use them. What I love about this book is the effortlessness each recipe seems to embody. It’s an approach to cooking through great ingredients that is simple, to the point of being completely divine. One fabulous dish after the other; recipes you will actually make over and over again.

I believe the book to be a great reflection of Sarah, who is always upbeat and has a fabulously optimistic and generous outlook on life. In our communications, she is always sure to mention her family and ask about mine, which is so thoughtful and lovely for everyone.

I can only imagine her little Greta cooking by her side! Her past work with Food Network and Good Food Gardens also shines through, with a consistent theme surrounding healthy eating and the “cooks garden.” I love the concept and do hope for my very own garden to actually have some success *this* year!

As we jump headfirst into Spring wedding season {my calendar is packed full of wonderful wedding events, including my best friends wedding next month, hooray!} what better way to celebrate than with a giveaway! BANANA MUFFINS

Growing up, there was always one smell I could recognize as soon as I entered the house, my Mom’s banana muffins. Famous in our neighborhood, they were always given as little gifts for new neighbors, thank-yous, Christmas morning treats, etc. When I went off to college, this was the one recipe I asked my Mom to give me. I remember her face when I asked her for the recipe card – a blank stare – she just knew the recipe by heart. She had been making it for years and years, a recipe given to her by her father. Thankfully, she wrote it down for me and it’s a recipe card I now cherish!

Serve these banana muffins with nuts for an extra little crunch or make them into a loaf or mini-muffin size instead. Now you’ll have a fabulous reason to use up those ripe bananas in your kitchen. So, thank you Mom for passing down this Dial family recipe which I now get to share with you!

Banana Muffins by Phronsie Dial

1/2 cup butter, softened (Mom always left it out overnight)
1 cup sugar
3 eggs, separated
3 ripe bananas, mashed
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 teaspoons hot water

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks and beat well. Blend in bananas, vanilla, and lemon juice. Mix in flour and baking soda. Add hot water. Beat egg whites separately and then fold into batter. Never over-beat muffin batter, if it’s lumpy – it’s just right! Spray muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray. Fill muffin tin with batter and bake at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes to make 12 muffins!”

Did you know that September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month?

One of my clients is CURE Childhood Cancer, an amazing non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer in our lifetime. They are a tireless team dedicated to the cause and have done so many amazing things over the years to make this dream more and more a reality than ever before. This year I am thrilled to be actively participating as a blogger in the CURE Community, helping to raise awareness and get others involved in helping CURE.

And, with our little baby boy on the way, it has an even deeper and more personal meaning that it ever has before. One thing I’d like to pass down to him is the gift of doing good for others in the world when you have the opportunity to do so.

This month, CURE is sharing stories and honoring children who have been touched by childhood cancer each day in September as part of their 3rd annual CURE’s Kids Conquer Cancer One Day at a Time. In their first two years of the program, CURE has honored over 150 children and raised nearly $400,000 to help fight childhood cancer.

I hope you’ll take a minute to pop over and read some of these truly amazing stories. This year myself, my husband and our little-boy-to-be are teaming up to raise $1,000 to support one of the CURE Kids – Kylie Seiz. You can click over to read more about why we’re getting involved and learn more about her personal story too.

What is “I Support CURE’s Kids?”
The idea for “I Support CURE’s Kids” began as a way for friends in the blogging community (do I count as a “mommy blogger” yet?) to help show their support for CURE Childhood Cancer during the month of September.

An amazing group of bloggers has agreed to “donate” a blog post during the month of September to help spread awareness for CURE Childhood Cancer, as well as a spot on their blog for the “I Support CURE’s Kids” blog badge. Some of my amazing  friends (Wendy at Layla Grayce, Laura at Scholz Communications, Stacy at InkSpot Workshop, Courtney at Pizzazzerie, Kelly & Amy at Swoozie’s, Joni at Lay Baby Lay, and Pam & Melissa at Project Nursery …  the list goes on … THANK YOU!) have generously agreed to take part.  I hope you will consider doing so on your own blog, too!

Click here to view our current list of blogger friends in the CURE Community, or to learn more about getting involved.

I Support CURE’s Kids Blogger Raffle

And, as a little extra fun, some of these amazing folks, among many other bloggers, business owners & companies have donated some FABULOUS products and services that moms & kids will simple ADORE for CURE’s “I Support CURE’s Kids Blogger Raffle.” You can get in on the goods for as little as $10 (which all goes directly to support CURE) – click here to view the list of raffle items that you could win! You will even see a little something special in there from my own IceMilk Aprons – so be sure to get a ticket or two for your shot at our new Mother & Daughter gift package!

Thank you for your support this month, more to come! You can join in to raise awareness by joining CURE Childhood Cancer on Facebook and Twitter (@curechildcancer) too!

Like many people with an entrepreneurial spirit, I have many mentors to thank for where I am today.

I am a big believer in mentoring and the amazing impact that can be had when one takes the time to share their craft with someone who is passionate. Though I have many family members to thank for their advice and support over the years, one of my business mentors is friend Leigh Chandler of Papillon Linens. I have Leigh to thank for her kindness, patience and every step of the way in setting me up to tangibly succeed.

But, sometimes on a rare occasion, you make an impact without even realizing you are doing so. I received the most wonderful email several months back from Krista Montalvo. Krista owns Ginger Magnolia Catering {which means she’s a fabulous cook, of course!} and emailed me to let me know of a new business she had recently launched – Marmie Bags.

Krista told me in her note that IceMilk Aprons had inspired her to create Marmie Bags. She had connected with the story of our roots, having had the same fond relationship with her Grandmother that I did. She now has children of her own, who lovingly call their Grandmother “Marmie.” I was so taken aback and inspired by her note and have enjoyed popping over and perusing her bags. I love the vintage feel she brings to the product and cheer her on as she continues to grow her business.

I am thrilled that we are hosting our first official giveaway on heirloomed with Marmie Bags, and even more thrilled with the bag she’s giving away! This fabulous bag is very reminiscent of our “Rollings of Cinnamon” apron – I just adore the big black bow and simplicity of the styling.

This lovely little bag could be all yours and entering is easy! You’ll get a new chance to enter for doing each of the below, with a total of four entries per person:

1. Leave a comment below with your best words of inspiration for Marmie and others who are launching their own businesses!

2. Like Heirloomed on Facebook {our Page is brand new – much appreciated!}. Leave an extra comment entry to let us know.

3. Like Marmie Bags on Facebook. Leave an extra comment entry to let us know.
