Southern Sweets

Join us for this week’s #southernchat as we talk about delicious Southern sweets from Goo Goo Clusters and Red Queen Tarts to marshmallows and shortbread cookies.  I look forward to hearing everyone’s favorites and sharing a few of them myself!

I love the history of the products from Chattanooga Bakery, the maker of Moon Pies and wish some of them were still around today! And, we even had a special chat just for Southern artisan chocolates. I loved stumbling across Sir Francis, who pairs such Southern ingredients as bacon & peanut brittle to make their boxes of confections.

To help further the Southern sweets discussion, we will be having special guest Jenny (@SweetSixCandy) who began Sweet Six Candy Co,  Using a recipe from her mother, Jenny spun her own versions of the six ingredient recipe and reeled people into her Sweet Six brown sugar candy. You can get to know more about this sweet company from our post yesterday to get an inside look.

Jenny also recommended I check into Wondermade marshmallows – and if they taste half as amazing as their packaging looks – I’m 100% sold! With flavors like bourbon & lavender, there is no doubt these fluffy wonders were made right here in the South. She also said I should look into  Jane’s Short Sweets, a company that not only makes sweets but is also sweet-as-can-be by donating all of their profits to charity!

Despite the size of your sweet tooth is, I hope you’ll join us this week for #southernchat!

If you love Southern food, there’s a good chance you take the taste of a biscuit very seriously.  A staple in the Southern kitchen from breakfast to dinner, biscuits also allow each person to personalize theirs with honey, gravy, and different preserves. Most biscuits are made with the same ingredients: flour, buttermilk or milk, and some kind of fat or butter, but within the preparation is where many secret steps and family traditions take root.

Being a most adamant fan of breakfast & brunch, for me it doesn’t get much more Southern than the biscuit.  I love the notion of a flour-covered countertop, a strong tin biscuit cutter, and a warm biscuit just out of the oven in time for the meal to be enjoyed fresh.

This week we’ll be talking ingredients, secrets, favorites, and traditions for our biscuit #southernchat.  I hope you can join us in the chat and that we might encourage you to share a special recipe of your own, or make your own biscuits for you and your family. Join in this week for our biscuit #southernchat at 9:00PM est this Monday 3/18/13.

Giveaways: This week we have TWO extra-special giveaways this week! Just join in the chat by using the #southernchat hashtag sometime from 9:00-10:00pm est on 3/18/13 and you’ll be automatically entered to win. Two lucky winners will be chosen at random.

The first is thanks to Southern blogger, Kate Spears of Southern Belle Simple  and the  International Biscuit Festival to be held 5/15-18 in Knoxville, TN. They are kindly giving away a pair of tickets to Biscuit Boulevard for one of our lucky #southernchat friends to enjoy! Now that is one celebration I’d love to take part in {judges needed?}.

The second is thanks to our friends at Pillsbury, who are giving away a fun gift basket to one lucky #southernchat friend this week! I personally love their flaky layers biscuit, which is my favorite quality of a true Southern biscuit, and they’re so perfect when you’re in a pinch for a quick, home-cooked meal!

With daylight savings time underway and the sun shining just a little bit longer, I figure it’s close enough to spring to go ahead and start the celebration with a little giveaway – don’t you think?

My favorite time of year is coming near, when the weather gets warmer (and by warmer, I mean hot here in the South) and when people come out of the woodwork to have fun and gather together for no reason at all. Spring weddings come to life, and long weekends to the lake & beach are more frequent than not. Fresh fruits & veggies are plentiful, and the grill is always on call to be fired up.

Monogrammed linen napkins & table runner

I am so proud of the new heirloomed collection linens and think they are just perfect for Spring entertaining. I worked hard to keep them simple, yet still distinctive and to keep a balanced juxtaposition of a luxurious linen paired with the rustic, simple kraft pastry packaging. And, I am so thrilled to share that I’ve just added (just now!) the option to have the table runner embroidered if you so wish. You may either have a single letter monogram for the center of the runner, or an “established” date on the detail tag on one end to commemorate a special date. I love the personal touch, and hope you will too.

And now … onto the Spring Giveaway! Hope you’ll join in for a chance to win the heirloomed table linens gift package – a set of four napkins and table runner.

Artisan Cheeses

I am by no means a cheese expert but I am certainly a connoisseur! Cheese is one of my very favorite things and fresh, local cheese simply cannot be beat. This week our #southernchat focuses on something we all can love –  Southern Artisan Cheeses! A growing number of farms and creameries have been popping up across the South, and we are so fortunate to have such talented folks to share their craft {and cheese!} with us.

cheese board

I have long been a fan of Belle Chevre cheeses and am so thrilled that Tasia Malakasis has agreed to be our guest for this week’s chat. I fell in love with her passionate story of truly learning the craft and carrying it on in her home-state of Alabama. Growing up in Tallahassee, I was also familiar with Sweet Grass Dairy, and was so pleased to see they just opened a new flagship store in Thomasville, GA when I visited last month. And, I have loved chatting with @Timthecheeseman for some time on Twitter, and can’t help but visit Star Provisions here in Atlanta – a simply beautiful store & market where Tim is the well-known cheesemonger.

Southern Artisan Cheeses

Cheese Makers & Mongers

Beyond these wonderful cheeses, I was thrilled to learn of so many other creameries, dairies, farms & experts out there in the South. I know you will have a few more to share this week in #southernchat, and with so much to learn about this favorite food, the craft & more!

Inspired by my love for summer whites, I think it’s time for a little IceMilk Aprons giveaway {don’t you think?}

I feel that my obsession to pin, pin, pin as of late has taken away some time from my other lovely friends on Facebook and Twitter so I have decided to give a little love back that way. And, if you must know, summer is my all-time favorite season {90-degree weather and all}.

It’s a simple little giveaway for one of my very favorite aprons – the Frosty Tin Marshmallows – inspired by my Grandmother’s tasty little frozen mint salad treats.

Summer always brings something to celebrate – good times with family & friends at the lake or beach, and weddings too! Lots of home-cooking with all those fresh summer fruits & veggies, too. And, I hope an heirloom apron only adds to your entertaining fun!

Hope you’ll partake for a chance to win!

As I always say, the best thing about Twitter is the people I have met online since I first started tweeting ages ago. And, Alyssa Shelasky of Apron Anxiety is no exception. I was beyond excited when she emailed me about her new book that comes out tomorrow and just knew it would be a great collaboration for us both!

If you haven’t popped over to her blog yet, do so without hesitation. Of course we have the obvious “apron” connection, but I instantly fell in love with her blog. She has a frankness that you don’t see much here in the South, and her personality shines through with every word. But, what I love most is the romantic feel it has. The imagery and her selections have a high fashion meets editorial feel with a throwback nod and I love the look.

I’m just thrilled for Alyssa and her new book of the same name – Apron Anxiety: My Messy Affairs In and Out of the Kitchen. Today, I have a very special giveaway of the book, and tomorrow stay tuned as she joins us for the Heirloom Recipe Series too. I can’t get enough of the splattered recipe card she shares, you won’t want to miss out.

As always, entering is so simple.  You can earn one entry for each of the below that you might choose to do, for a chance at 4 total entries – just remember to leave a comment for EACH of the below that you complete so your efforts will be counted!

It is my pleasure today to have Jennifer Chandler author and blogger at Cook With Jennifer sharing a recipe for the Heirloom Recipe Series.

I love Jennifer’s way of cooking by making dishes simple and delicious, and her wonderful recipe below is no exception. Today she has a recipe that is close to her family’s heart and one that will be perfect for summertime! Also, if you haven’t already, make sure to put in an entry for the giveaway we are doing for Jennifer’s new cookbook Simply Grilling this week! {click here}

To me, an heirloom recipe is one that conjures up memories of family and friends, delicious meals I can still taste, as well as laughter and happiness shared over the dinner table. Recipes that not only fill our bellies, but also warm our souls and put a smile on our faces. That’s what I want for supper. Don’t’ you?

Tequila Chicken Fajitas probably are not what comes to mind when one thinks of an “heirloom” recipe … but this recipe fits that bill for me and my family. Meals are a time to enjoy delicious dishes that are fun to eat and simple to prepare.

My Dad has been making this recipe for family gatherings for close to twenty years now.  When we get together for Sunday lunch, to watch an LSU or Saints game on TV, or to celebrate a birthday, the odds are pretty good that fajitas will be on the menu.

With an extended family that now includes 5 siblings, their spouses, kids, and friends … as well as the occasional neighbor who just drops in during supper hour, my father is always feeding a crowd.  Having a recipe like this that is easy to prepare in large quantities is the key to his (and now my) stress-free entertaining.

My family loves this recipe so much that it seemed fitting that it would be the cover of my new grilling cookbook.

Trust me when I tell you these are the best fajitas you will ever have! Enjoy!

Tequila Chicken Fajitas

Clean, rinse, and pat dry chicken breasts (Boneless, Skinless). Place in a bowl and rub each piece with olive oil.  Add one head of garlic thinly sliced and a small onion sliced. Add a generous amount of Tabasco sauce and make certain each piece of chicken is seasoned. Add a couple of  jiggers of Tequila to the dish and then add enough fresh lemon juice to cover the chicken. Place in the refrigerator for several hours. Best when left over night. Be sure to cover while marinating

Slice in thin strips one red, green, and yellow bell pepper. Cut one large onion in half and slice thinly. Saute the bell peppers and onion in a good olive oil till soft.  Place the chicken breasts on a hot grill and cook turning once till done, thinly slice when done. Serve on warm tortillas with the onion and bell peppers along with guacamole, salsa, and shredded cheddar cheese.

Author Jennifer Chandler has two other Simple cookbooks including Simply Suppers and Simply Salads. She also was a former national spokesperson for French’s Mustard™.  You can connect with Jennifer on Twitter, Facebook, and her blog Cook with Jennifer.
